As well as
visiting York there is plenty to do and visit on the doorstep of the
Swallows' Nest.
Footpaths,
or roads, across the local countryside take you to the nearby villages
of Newton on Ouse and Linton on Ouse.
The Blacksmiths Arms in Newton is a popular local pub, offering
a wide range of real ales and a great choice of pizzas and other meals
to eat in or take away.
Also in Newton is All Saints' church which holds regular services. Continuing
down the avenue you will find Beningbrough Hall, a well visited National
Trust property.
Linton on
Ouse also has a popular pub, the College Arms, which has an
in-house Indian restaurant where you can sit down and eat or buy a takeaway.
Just outside Linton is the picturesque attraction of Linton Lock; here
you can while away some time by the River Ouse with a drink and a meal.

You'll also
find a shop in Linton which doubles up as the Post Office.
Not far away
at Tollerton is the Station Inn, now a very popular Chinese
restaurant and takeaway. We are surrounded by many other pretty villages,
most of which are home to popular pubs and restaurants.
The Swallows'
Nest is also on National Cycle Route R65, so bring your cycles and use
the flat as your cycling holiday base.

Should you
want to go further afield, the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire National
Parks are only an hour's drive away where you can enjoy an exhilarating
day's walking, cycling or climbing for the more adventurous among you.
If your children
need some fun Flamingoland or Lightwater Valley theme
parks will keep them and you occupied for the day. Both are less than
an hour's drive away.
The Yorkshire
Coast offers some spectacular views from Flamborough Head to Sandsend.
Filey is a quiet Edwardian resort, Bridlington and Scarborough are livelier,
whilst Whitby is a more traditional and active fishing port.
Shopaholics
amongst you are well catered for with the cities of York and Leeds and
the prosperous town of Harrogate.
If you're a fan of the turf there are regular race meets at York, Ripon,
Thirsk and Wetherby, and for those of you into the golf turf there is
a good 18 hole course at the nearby Aldwark Manor Hotel and at the market
town of Easingwold
Fishing permits
are available at Newton and Linton if you just want to sit by the River
Ouse and wait for something to bite.
So whilst
staying at The Swallows' Nest, there is lots to do if you like, or you
can take it easy and enjoy what the immediate locality has to offer.
